WLA Link Editor / Assistant Editor
Job Description

WLA Link

WLA Link is one of three official publications of the Washington Library Association, providing WLA members with highlights of each Board meeting, announcements of workshops, news from Interest Groups, personnel and institutional news, a short calendar of upcoming events, and other items of interest to the membership.

Appointment and term

This position is appointed by the Association President with approval of the WLA Board for a two year term, the first year as Assistant Editor and the second year as Editor. Terms are concurrent with the Associations fiscal year.

Summary

Under the general direction of the Associations Coordinator of Communications and following the WLA Publication Guidelines, the Editor writes, edits, and oversees the production of five annual issues of the four page WLA Link newsletter. The Assistant Editor serves in an understudy capacity for the Editor, assisting as required.

Editor Responsibilities:

  1. Edits the newsletter within the publications guidelines, including soliciting material, writing articles, and editing copy.
  2. Produces newsletter and arranges for mailing, preparing text files, proofreading, designing layout and graphics, working with the printer, determining the size of the printing run, and coordinating mailing with the WLA Association Coordinator and the mailing service.
  3. Coordinates business aspects of the newsletter, including planning and monitoring the budget, engaging the services of a printer and mailing service, submitting vouchers for payment, and coordinating with the Association Coordinator and Treasurer.
  4. Serves as a non-voting member of the WLA Board, attending all WLA Board meetings and the annual conference, communicating with officers and members as necessary.

Assistant Editor Responsibilities

  1. Serves as understudy for Editor, assisting with responsibilities as required.
  2. Attends meetings in the absence of the editor.

Requirements

Dynamic, self-motivated individual with experience and/or skills in writing and editing newsletters or other publications, strong organizational skills, a knowledge of WLA and Washington libraries, and scheduling flexibility that allows attendance at Board meetings and the annual conference. Must use own microcomputer and be accessible by telephone, fax, and e-mail. Must be a WLA personal member.

Compensation

The WLA Link Editor, and the Assistant Editor in the Editors absence, is compensated for travel to all WLA Board meetings and up to $300 for attending the WLA annual conference. In addition, the Editor receives compensation for each issue published in an amount determined by the Association Board.

Reporting responsibilities

The WLA Link Assistant Editor/Editor reports to the Association President, working under the general direction of the Coordinator of Communications.
