Please enjoy the newest issue of Alki : July 2017 - The Social Justice Issue

Alki Summer 2017

Social justice issues are front and center for many Washington State libraries. Growing income inequality, an increase in hate crimes and a political climate that threatens our most vulnerable patrons have spurred libraries into action. In the Social Justice issue, the summer issue of Alki, we hear from public and academic librarians who are leading the fight against "fake news," providing services to marginalized communities like prisoners and the unhoused, promoting inclusion through diverse readers advisory and the creation of safe spaces, and fostering challenging conversations about the role of libraries in difficult times.

Announcing the 2017 WLA Conference Theme

WLA is pleased to share the news that the Conference Planning Committee has chosen a theme for the 2017 conference in Tacoma: “Libraries Through the Looking-Glass.”

Tacoma has a vibrant glass arts community, including the Museum of Glass in walking distance from the Hotel Murano, which itself has an impressive glass art collection on display throughout the hotel and conference facility. Also within walking distance is the Chihuly Bridge of Glass and an Alice in Wonderland public art mural. The committee also gravitated towards the idea of libraries reflecting back upon themselves, a core purpose of the annual conference.

Pierce County Library System has generously offered the services of their graphics staff to work with the committee on a logo to illustrate the theme.

Change in Election Cycle for 2018 Leadership Positions

WLA will be making a call for nominations in mid-June for all open Board, Section, and Division positions. Election nominations are due August 1, with candidate statements due by August 15th. The voting period will take place September 1-30, and winners will be announced by October 2nd. (Committee Chairs are appointed by the WLA President and do not go through this election process.) Please see the following Elections page for more information.

Positions will run January-December, 2018. This change to the election cycle was made in part to align elected terms with WLA’s fiscal year. If you have questions, please contact the WLA office.
