Librarians Must Survive: Can they? Will they?
John Berry III, Editor-in-Chief, Library Journal (videotape*)
Evan St. Lifer, Senior Editor, News & Infotech, Library Journal (in person)

John Berry will discuss vital topics including challenges to librarians from outside forces; the attitudes of various influential constituencies who already predict the obsolescence of libraries due to technology; and the efforts of religious or political extremists who oppose the freedom libraries need to fully discharge their mandate to provide full information, free of charge.

* In late February, Mr.Berry was involved in a serious automobile accident. He regrets that his back injury precludes him from airplane travel. We will present his videotaped comments, which will be expanded upon by Mr. St. Lifer.

Terry Wilson, Human Resources Coordinator, WSL

Five years ago, the Washington State Library made a commitment to quality methods and philosophy in managing the work we do. As part of that commitment, all middle management positions were abolished, and the entire organization was rebuilt around self-managing teams. At the same time, management adopted a customer-driven approach to strategic planning process improvement and performance measurement. Turnaround and customer surveys indicate significant improvement in satisfaction. WSL staff will share their approach and the lessons learned along the way.

Shimmer and Shine: The Mirage of Digital Collection Management
Susan Odenkrantz
Director, Tacoma Public Library

Librarians have envisioned a future of providing massive quantities of digital material - magazines, newspapers, books, photographs, and now audio materials - to our public both inside and outside the walls of the library.  We knew that there were technical problems to be solved and we knew that there were problems in building a permanent archival collection.  Recently, we have added the specter of changing copyright laws and "fair use" practices that are directed toward the digital format of our materials.  It's clear that managing digital formats will be more complex than managing paper formats.  If you love a challenge, join the discussion of changing technologies, laws, practices, and expectations.

Getting Sticky: Marketing Your Library on the Web
Joshua Buntain, Webmaster, City of Spokane
Tracey Carlson, Web Designer, Klundt Hosmer Design, Inc.
Jim Lantz, Business Development Director, Identity By Design
David Domkoski (moderator), Community Relations, Tacoma Public Library,

Visiting a web site is a lot like a blind date...  There are lots of expectations, lots of rejection and disappointments and sometimes -- though ever-so-rare -- a second date, and than a third, and a fourth... and
pretty soon it's a relationship.  You've been bookmarked!

The most successful web sites are those that ENGAGE users and ENCOURAGE them to return again and again and again.  It's called stickiness.  If your web site is sticky people will come and stay, other web sites will stand in line to link to yours, people will speak of your site in hushed awe-filled tones of admiration and envy.  And if it's not sticky? Well...

This program will explore how libraries can create web sites with
STICKINESS, and generate BUZZ while proactively promoting library
resources, services and programs -- creating a-long term relationship with the user.
