BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE YAKIMA VALLEY MUSEUM

See what goes on behind the displays in this private tour of the beautifully remodeled museum. Learn about the yakimamemory.org project in cooperation with Yakima Valley Regional Library. Afterward, see the current displays at your leisure. Then stop at the museum's circa 1939 soda fountain for an ice cream treat.

Yakima Valley Museum focuses on natural history, Native American culture, early pioneer life, and development of the fruit industry in Yakima Valley. There is an extensive collection of horse-drawn vehicles and an interactive children's center, a display devoted to Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, plus a changing schedule of special exhibits

Directions: Take Yakima Avenue west to 16th Ave. Turn right on 16th. Next light is Tieton Drive.Turn right on Tieton Drive. Museum is on right at 21st. Parking at side or rear of building. Allow 10 minutes.

Enjoy an after-dinner stroll to the beautiful Capitol Theatre for champagne and dessert on the stage. The festivities will include a celebration of Beverly Cleary's birthday, and silent auction to benefit the Beverly Cleary Endowed Chair for Children's and Youth Services at the Information School of the University of Washington. Designed in the Pantages style by B. Marcus Pretica, the Capitol was the largest theatre in the Pacific Northwest when it opened in April, 1920. For many years it was a must-stop on the vaudeville circuit. After a devastating fire in 1975, the community rallied to rebuild the "grand old lady, and the magnificently restored Capitol reopened in 1978, complete with glorious ceiling murals recreated by A.B. Heinsbergen, the original designer

Directions: Turn west (right) out of the conference center onto Yakima Avenue. Walk 7 blocks on Yakima. turn left at 3rd Street. The theatre is a block on the left. Free parking across the street.

AN EVENING AT YAKIMA NATION CULTURAL CENTER
Friday, April 11
Buses leave Conference Center at 6:15 p.m. and Toppenish at 9:45 p.m.
Cost: Dinner, $30.00,including gratuity

Relax and unwind with your colleagues during this leisurely evening on the ancestral grounds of theYakama Indians. We will begin the evening with a museum and library tour. The museum's permanent exhibit, "The Challenge of Spilay," uses life-size dioramas and wall poetry to trace the life of the Yakamas since prehistoric times. We'll move on to a traditional salmon dinner in the 76-foot-high Winter Lodge, and end the evening with a demonstration of traditional Yakama dancing. You may even get a chance to join the dance! Alcohol is not allowed at the center.

Directions: Take I-82 (Highway 12) south to the Highway 97, Toppenish exit. The center is approximately 18 miles south on Highway 97, on the right, approximately a mile before Fort Road light. If you go on to Legends Casino after dinner, continue south to Fort Road, turn right, and follow the signs..

COWICHE CANYON HIKE
Saturday, April 12
Bus leaves Conference Center at 9:00 a.m; the trailhead at 1:00 p.m.
Cost: $29; includes bus and box lunch

Join Kenneth Toop, Barge-Lincoln Elementary School Media Specialist, for a very easy 2-4 mile hike in the Cowiche Canyon Conservancy Area. The well-maintained, mostly gravel, trail follows the creek and crosses it several times by bridge. April is usually lush with wildflowers. Enjoy lunch on the trail. Ken recommends you bring a water bottle, hat, sweater, and binoculars.

WINERY AND VINEYARD TOUR
Saturday, April 12
Bus leaves Conference Center at 1:30 p.m; returns to Center at 6:00 p.m.
Cost: $21 for bus

It's the perfect way to end a stay in the Yakima Valley. We'll visit several wineries, including Silver Lake in Zillah, where we will tour the facility and walk in the vineyards. Bring your camera for the awesome views from some of the wineries. Monica Weyhe, Yakima Valley Regional Library director and wine connoisseur, will host.
