Effective
Marketing for Libraries
Laura
K. Lee Dellinger
Executive Vice President, Metropolitan
Group
Libraries should
market themselves – now is the time to take action!
In this workshop, an experienced marketing professional will
clarify marketing principles, present the elements of a marketing
plan, assist participants in developing marketing plans for
their local libraries, and provide invaluable tips for creating
a visible, effective and well-funded library. Participants
will learn about the Washington State Library’s campaign
for libraries, “Discover. Explore. Experience.”
Learn how to use the campaign to increase use of services,
develop support from the community, and improve funding from
taxpayers and private philanthropy. A toolkit of materials
for library staff to use in promoting and marketing their
library will be provided.

How
to Expand Your Library Without Increasing Its Size
Chris Carlson and
Lisa Roberts
Principals, Buffalo
Design
Demand for library services in your community
continues to grow as new materials, media and technologies
become available. Your library has also become a meeting hall,
a study center and after hours performance space. You’re
out of space, but economic realism offers no immediate hope
for a successful capital campaign or bond issue. Library planning
consultants and architects, Buffalo Design, show how wise
space planning, new display and material handling systems
and some creative thinking can revitalize and extend the life
of your existing library without waiting for a major financial
investment. This program will showcase design and planning
techniques for building in flexibility, expanding collection
capacity, adjusting buildings to changing patterns of use
and welcoming new technologies, all on a limited budget. Some
creative funding ideas that have helped other libraries succeed
will also be discussed. Check out www.buffalodesign.com
for examples of local libraries on which they have worked.

From formal class sessions to drop-in workshops
to one-on-one training at the reference desk, instruction
constantly occurs in libraries. Changing demographics throughout
our state are leading to different audiences for instruction.
During this pre-conference, you will learn from academic and
public librarians, as well as university professors, who work
with diverse populations. The pre-conference will give you
insights into the impact of diversity on research along with
specific tools that will help you work with adult learners,
ESL patrons, and young adult or “Generation Y”
students.

Laugh with the members of Society Gaius Julius
Solinas V. Washingtonius as they present scholarly papers that
give librarians the opportunity to keep abreast of the most
improbable, absurd and wackiest findings in the library field. |
