RIG Shadow Program
Want to see what reference is really all about?

How the Shadow Program Works
  • RIG members can browse our list of potential hosts and select a certain type of library (public, academic, school, special), a specific institution from that category, and an information professional from that institution based on their profile

  • The RIG member will then contact the potential host using the provided form and coordinate a date and time for the shadow session. The form also outlines their expectations for the visit, so that the host is aware of any special areas of interest.

  • During the shadow session, the RIG member will observe the host in their performance of reference service and any other job duties, remaining unobtrusive, but asking questions between patrons or when appropriate.

  • Following the session, both the RIG member and the host are invited to comment on their experience. This feedback can be sent to RIG and, with permission, may be posted on the RIG website.

Statement of Purpose
The RIG Shadow Program has been developed in order to provide RIG members with an opportunity of observing reference work as it is performed in the field. Through shadowing an information professional, the RIG member can witness firsthand what the process of providing reference service entails. It is our hope that this experience will be rewarding for both the host and the RIG member. Please note that the scope of the Shadow Program is not strictly limited to reference. Our members are interested in various aspects of library work, although the majority of interest will likely be centered on reference services.
