Libraries face a unique challenge. While maintaining a welcoming environment and providing free and open access to buildings and collections, they must also manage the personal safety of all who use the buildings. Unfortunately, libraries are also facing and increasing number of incidents involving confrontations with angry, hostile or

belligerent patrons, occasionally escalating into violence directed at staff. How can a library assess its ability to provide a safe and service-oriented environment for its customers and employees? A panel of library experts will look at policies and procedures, training, community resources and environmental changes need to ensure a positive, respectful and safe workplace.
