WALT Meeting

March 7, 2003

 

Present:  Christa Hardy, Jess chandler, Kandy Turk, Karen Miller, Susanne Woodford, Mary Stillwell, Elizabeth Laukea, Mary Ross, Tamara Georgick, and Kerry Maher.

Steering Committee and others will meet at WLA on Thursday, 9pm, at registration area to make sure everything is ready for Friday.

WALT Business Meeting Planning

§         Mary Ross agreed to chair the meeting, and Mary Stillwell and Catherine Lord (Steering Committee) will co-chair.

§         Meeting should include:  Introduction to WALT, presentation of Bylaws, take nominations of officers from the group, and suggestions for future training.  A discussion should take place regarding how WALT can benefit the "trainer" at the small library.

§         Catherine Lord will orchestrate the change of the room from the previous Icebreakers session to the Business Mtg..

§         Kerry Maher update the WALT brochure for the meeting and web site.

 

PreConference

§         Mary Stillwell and Christa Hardy are presenting Public PC Training with a 4 person panel from KCLS, Sno-Isle, Kitsap Regional Library and Whitman County.

§         Tamara Georgick shared that WLA has had only 1 registration for this so far.  She will get an updated number next week. 

§         Mary Stillwell will talk to Jennifer Merry (WLA) regarding the minimum needed to run the program. 

 

Training on the Cheap

All involved should send handouts they need copied to Kerry Maher, and the links to Mary Stillwell to add to the web site.  Kerry will put together a packet to hand out for the session.

 

WALT web site

Mary Stillwell will add conference info and create an "About WALT" page for general information, bylaws, etc.  Mary will update Membership info with updated list from WLA and future meeting dates.

 

Icebreakers & Energizers

§         Catherine Lord will put together the packet for the Energizers and Tina Bixby is the facilitator.

§         Kandy Turk and Jess Chandler presented a fun icebreaker for diversity training using animal sounds to find like others that are similar.

§         Karen Miller talked about her exercise for slowing trainers down.  Involves a participant needing to explain to someone how to tie a shoe without using their hands.

§         Susanne Woodford presented 3 exercises she has used in Safety training and Emergency Response.

§         Elizabeth Laukea presented the Walking Billboards exercise used as a getting to know you icebreaker.

§         Mary Ross shared training tips and a game she uses as a Mind Break.

 

 

WLA - other

§         All handouts should be done in Comic Sans 12 or 14.

§         Kerry Maher will check to make sure the meeting rooms are in the Conference Ctr. with 

broadband.  WLA will provide projectors, but those needing a laptop should bring one. 

§         Catherine Lord will put together a soap basket for the meet & greet on Wednesday p.m.

 

Other

§         Jess Chandler wants info on the BCC Consortium. Catherine Lord may be a good source.

§         Tamara Georgick is going to sit in on a Spanish in the Library class at Tacoma CC.  It is 2 evenings with a cost of $125.  WSL has CE money to contribute if this class is a good one.  If anyone else attends, she would like feedback.

§         Tamara is also interested in creating a training portal on the WSL web site for library basic skills.  She will be creating a committee for this soon.

§         Mary Ross shared that the IMLS has $10 million for recruiting, training, and continuing education for future librarians.

 

Next Meetings

4/25/03       Debrief following WLA.  Mary Ross will arrange for a live chat meeting using 24/7.
