This is a transcript of your Washington State Library online reference session.

Mary Ross:  This morning I was showing Elizabeth some online instruction software...

Karen Miller:  Mary, I was at the business meeting - sis not get to sign the sheet ;(

Mary Ross:  OK, thanks Karen, we'll correct that in the minutes.

Mary Ross:  Any other additions or corrections to minutes? Do these look OK?

Karen Miller:  Robin asked for some kind of training, I believe?

Mary Ross:  Yes, some training on presentations prior to next WLA Conference.

Mary Ross:  WLA interest group chair was going to contact WALT about that.

Mary Ross:  OK with Karen's change, do you approve minutes?

Kerry Maher:  yes

Mary Ross:  I'll go back to our agenda now.

Mary Ross:  Reactions to our WLA programs?  Christa, what did you think about pre-conference?

Christa:  I thought things went very well.

Christa:  Mary & I were very encouraged by the dialogue that was taking place.

Christa:  I'd like to express our thanks again to Karen, Kristie & Steve for sharing their best practices.

Mary Ross:  Mary S. was also pleased with the program and the evaluations were good.

Mary Ross:  Kerry--what did you think about Staff Training on the Cheap?

Kerry Maher:  I think we gave people a lot of good information, and it seemed a lot of it was new to them.

Karen Miller:  One from our branch went and found things she needed for her staff - we thought it was useful information

Mary Ross:  There's some interest in repeating that program, possibly at WALE Conference.

Kerry Maher:  All I know is that if I'm involved again I hope I can figure out a way to jazz it up a little.

Mary Ross:  Karen--what did you think about Icebreakers program?

Karen Miller:  I thought it was useful and people liked it - I just didn't like my part.

Kerry Maher:  All I heard were good things about the session!

Mary Ross:  Karen--Would you do a different activity next time?

Karen Miller:  Yes I would - not sure what, right now. Have to think on that one and of course, open to suggestions from you guys.

Mary Ross:  It's an idea that can be repeated, with different activities, next year.

Kerry Maher:  I think I've got a couple &/or I'd be interested in doing one next time.

Mary Ross:  good...

Mary Ross:  Any other comments about Yakima?

Mary Ross:  Just two quick informational items...

Mary Ross:  WALT ballots (election of officers and approval of bylaws) will be mailed soon.

Mary Ross:  Also, we have two good locations for repeating the Cultivating Supervisory Success workshop...

Mary Ross:  One is Timberland Regional Library, the other is Sno-Isle Service Center in Marysville.

Mary Ross:  We are looking at September dates...

Mary Ross:  How many staff from your libraries are likely to attend future sessions?

Kerry Maher:  Is there any chance of having another one in Seattle area?  Lots of KCLS staff are clamoring for another.  I think we've got about 25 on a waiting list from the last one.

Mary Ross:  Is Marysville too far for KCLS staff?

Karen Miller:  I don't know yet, as we had 4 going to the first one, but there is a lot of interest, I know.

Kerry Maher:  Oh...I imagine several think it is, yes.

Mary Ross:  Kerry--if you have a guaranteed audience of 25, we could talk about doing it at KCLS.

Kerry Maher:  Let me check with Cathy and one of us will get back to you.

Mary Ross:  OK, that's a definite possibility.

Mary Ross:  On to the BIG question, would you attend a WALT meeting in Yakima in October, (WALE Conference Oct.2-4)?

Kerry Maher:  Honestly...I'd have to think about that...not sure I would.

Karen Miller:  Would anyone go just for the meeting and workshop and not the conference?

Mary Ross:  If we were able to make good contacts for WALT in eastern WA it may be worth going just for an all-day meeting...

Mary Ross:  But I'd prefer combining it with a program that benefits library staff.

Mary Ross:  [Page sent - "Agenda for online meeting.doc"]

Mary Ross:  [Page sent] http://ref3.247ref.org/wcsapp/servlet/RetrieveServlet/publish/default/home/mross/sessions/chan.115705.rrew/Agenda%20for%20online%20meeting.doc

Kerry Maher:  That would be great if we could combine it with a program.

elizabeth i.:  what is the attendance like for the WALE conference, compared to WLA?

Mary Ross:  smaller probably 175 to 200.

Kerry Maher:  And, aren't most attendees Library Assistants?

Mary Ross:  yes, but it varies--WALE is an interest group for library support staff.

Mary Ross:  What do you think about online meetings?  Takes longer than face-to-face discussion doesn't it?

Kerry Maher:  Yes, but for discussions and informational mtgs. rather than big decision making...it's pretty convenient.

Karen Miller:  It does take longer, but not as long as driving to meetings and you can also do a few other things.  I like it. Kerry's absolutely right, I think!

Kerry Maher:  Plus you can be at home in your sweatpants!!

Mary Ross:  :-)  We'll see you at the next WALT meeting, July 18 at Sno-Isle...
