WALT Meeting

Friday, 10/24/03, 9am-3pm

SPL--Washington Talking Book & Braille Library, Seattle

Present: Elaine James (MPL), Elizabeth Iaukea (WSL), Karen Miller (KRL), Jess Chandler (Sno-Isle), Mary Ross (SPL), Mary Stillwell (Microsoft).

Minutes

We decided that rather than voting to approve the minutes form the previous meeting, the secretary will post the minutes to the listserv and ask for comments or corrections. Once any changes are made the minutes will be reposted and considered approved if no one objects.  That way the minutes can be posted to the WALT website between meetings.

Debrief on Cultivating Supervisory Success workshops

Mary Ross: All evaluations were very positive; all locations were full.  WALT made some money, approx $1729.

Discussion of whether we should apply for WSL CE grants in the future, and whether attendees can then apply for grants or not.  Which would make the most savings for people.

Mary Ross reviewed the list of training topics from evaluation forms.

WLA/PNLA conference proposals.

Mary Ross: WALT will propose to do the “Training Showcase” which will be similar to the session we did last year that was so successful.  MS, MR, KM, JC and EI all committed to participating in that session.

“Five Star Presentations” proposal --  The proposal is to have Guila Muir do a workshop and develop a guide.  We will not be doing this as a preconference.  WLA is interested in having this as part of the IG retreat.  We can also offer this as stand alone workshops. We agreed that the end of May would be a good time.  Possible locations: Tri-cities, Tumwater, and Marysville.  Keep the price around $75-$90.  Approx 40 per workshop.  Need to start publicizing at the end of February.

Other workshops

Jess Chandler suggested building on the success of the supervisory workshop because it really hit a nerve.  The group decided to focus on the Presentations workshop for this year.  Mary Ross, Mary Stillwell and Elizabeth Iaukea met with Pat Wagner in Yakima and discussed a conflict resolution workshop for the future.

Dates for 2004 meetings

Discussion about asking members to RSVP to meetings.  Since most everyone who comes is in the Puget Sound area, if we are going to try to hold a meeting in another part of the state we should get RSVPs to make sure it is worth it.

Possible meeting dates for 2004:

Jan 9th, Bellevue?

See if Jeff Martin of WSL can come.

April 9th              Marysville

August 13th at WLA/PNLA conference

October 29th SPL

OBE training

Elizabeth Iaukea: 2 days (12/16-17) at state library for approx 50 people.  Consultant hired by IMLS.  Elizabeth would like WALT members to attend and yhelp her work on the statewide business plan.

Reception for CLENE Members

WALT decided to host a happy hour for CLENE members during PLA.  We will try for Friday and will look for a place near the convention center.  Mary Stillwell will look for locations and find details for reserving a place.

CE Grants

Elizabeth Iaukea discussed CE Grants.  For more information contact her at eiaukea@secstate.wa.gov
