This two-day interactive program will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to develop and implement effective fundraising projects for your library. Using group exercises and a case study approach, you will be able to apply what you learn in a practical way and see the effects of the decisions you make.
As a result of this program, you will be able to:
• Understand the tasks required to implement a fundraising plan.
• Identify public and private funders.
• Assess your own library's position for fund-raising, along with the political ramifications.
• Identify potential stakeholders and develop the fundraising infrastructure.
• Identify fundraising options and recognize their pros and cons.
• Monitor the implementation of a fundraising plan and modify as needed.
A complete description of this course may be found at: http://www.pla.org/ala/pla/plaevents/cplacourses/fundraising/fundraising.cfm.
This program is designed to meet the requirements for CPLA certification, as well as the needs of library managers wanting to enhance their skills outside of the certification process.
Currently in use by over 250 public libraries, Evergreen is an open-source integrated library system (ILS) that can be downloaded for free. After a brief overview of Evergreen’s history, the presenters will demonstrate the main features and explain its underlying technology. This is a hands-on workshop where you can explore the Evergreen modules (OPAC, cataloging, circulations and reports), learn how to install and maintain Evergreen, and discuss how to scale up or down based on what your library needs. More information about Evergreen can be found at open-ils.org. Some laptops will be supplied but bring your wireless-enabled laptop if you can.
Tutorials 2.0: Developing a toolkit for user-oriented online library instructionTeaching librarians and technology trainers have long used the Internet to create flexible, shareable learning objects and to augment their classroom instruction. Emerging web technologies now allow library instruction to become ambient, user-centered, agile, and responsive. In this workshop, participants will explore the continuum of technologies available for constructing web-based instruction, from proprietary screencasting software to open-source, "2.0" services and technologies. They will be introduced to the conceptual and philosophical underpinnings of Web 2.0 and will collaboratively brainstorm ways to apply these principles to help users find, evaluate and use information. Regular opportunities for hands-on practice will be integrated into the presentation.
Hire Right the First TimeWhen you interview a potential employee, you should be looking at each person's skills as well as how he/she will fit into your organization. This performance-based workshop focuses on getting the most out of interviews to avoid the stress and expense of bad hiring experiences. You will explore how to use the Best Personality Profile in hiring; the things to look for in applications and resumes; what you can and cannot ask in an interview; advantages of scenario-based interviewing; and how to match job descriptions to applications and resumes. Learn to maximize the effectiveness of your recruitments by hiring the right person for your library.
Leave the Stereotypes BehindManagers and frontline staff learn new service techniques to transform the library into a more vibrant – and sustainable - destination. Library futurist Joan Frye Williams demonstrates that we can’t rely on "business as usual" when our customers are presented with increasingly attractive alternatives to meet their informational and recreational needs: up-to-the minute information on the internet; bookstores with plenty of parking, lattes, shiny books, movies on demand and more. Progressive libraries have shown that top quality service has as much to do with hospitality, merchandising, and point-of-need transactions as with offering the right content. And frontline staff are the key to our customers’ service experience. So while we shouldn’t sell out, we might want to “sell up.” Come find out how.
Map CatalogingThis introductory workshop is aimed at those who wish to begin cataloging their maps and those who want the opportunity to learn more about map cataloging. The skills taught include title selection, how to correctly measure a map, scale calculation, how to record other mathematical data correctly, and the notes specifically required for cartographic materials. Emphasis will be on sheet maps, with some discussion of atlases. Selecting copy from OCLC and original cataloging will be covered. Attendees will gain the ability to catalog maps at a basic level and be provided with a bibliography of resources.
Splash, Boom, Crash, Zoom! Creative Multimedia ProgramsRelease your inner child and inspire kids to be roaring readers! Sounds help the story spring from the pages and into the listener’s imagination. Learn to use realistic vocal impressions in your presentations and pick up some tips for PowerPoint. From clicking your tongue to imitating a jet plane, you’ll learn the ABCs of making noise from the Czar of Zany Sounds. This is an exciting, interactive workshop where you can try out the sounds or just listen to others. A handout with resources is provided.
Basic Book RepairAre you responsible for repairing books in your collection or for training volunteers to make repairs? Do you want to learn some archival methods for book repair, rather than relying on scotch tape and a hot glue gun? Learn about book construction and mechanics, preventative measures and how to organize a mending team. The presenter will demonstrate three basic repairs—hinge, torn pages and spine repairs—then you will be able to practice each. You will receive a book repair kit, including bone folder, Olfa knife, metal ruler, rubber cement pick-up, plastic and gum erasers, jar of PVA and double-stitched binders tape. Bring a damaged book, an apron (details will be e-mailed to participants) and a desire to learn by doing!
