Washington Children’s Choice Nomination and Selection Process 

Our Goal:  To Choose High-Quality Picture Books That Include a Variety of Subjects to Educate Our Students and to Foster the Love of Books


 WCCPBA Selection Process

  • Books from titles published in the last three years (2018, 2019, 2020) that contain positive reviews from credible sources. 
  • Books have been nominated by a librarian/elementary educator that has read the book.
  • Books are in picture-book format considered to be an engaging read-aloud for a K-3 audience. 
  • Additional factors that are considered: gender appeal, important themes, various genres, diversity, ease of lesson implementation, quality literature.
  • WCCPBA Committee strives to choose books that expose students to a wide array of books that they might not encounter on their own.
  • Additional factors considered in vetting the final list include, but are not limited to: gender appeal, important themes, various genres, diversity, engaging lesson possibility, quality literature and child appeal.
  • These books may be either fiction or nonfiction. Wordless books are not considered. We will not honor titles that are self-nominated.
  • Titles on the final 20-book nomination list will not be reconsidered in future years. 
  • Books are to be in print and distributed in the United States.
  • Submit 2021 ballot nominations by February 1, 2020 to this link
