Announcing Summit Keynote Speaker John Schu!
WLA is pleased to share that the keynote speaker for the Summit will be librarian and writer John Schu! Schu has made a career out of advocating for the people and things he cares about most: kids, books, and the people who connect them. He is the children’s librarian for Bookelicious and the author of This Is a School (Candlewick, 2022) illustrated by Veronica Miller Jamison, This Is a Story (Candlewick, 2023) illustrated by Caldecott Honor artist Lauren Castillo, Louder Than Hunger (Candlewick, 2024), Louder Than Hunger (Candlewick, 2024) and The Gift of Story: Exploring the Affective Side of the Reading Life (Stenhouse, 2022). John Schu lives in Naperville, IL.
Statewide registration is now open! WLA is excited to allow state libraries and state library associations to purchase a pass to grant all library staff in their state online access to the Summit. An all-access pass will allow staff from all levels, roles, and career stages to attend for a flat fee, based on the average number of library employees in your state.
Bibliotherapy in Libraries Summit: Healing Through Story
Bibliotherapy refers to the use of reading for therapeutic purposes, and as library people, we’ve all seen the way stories can transform, empower, and heal. Learn more about the affective benefits of reading and how libraries can use these ideas to positively impact the wellbeing of our patrons, communities, and ourselves, even if you’re not a licensed mental health professional.
The virtual Bibliotherapy in Libraries Summit offers day-long programming around the concept of bibliotherapy in collection development, readers advisory, programming, outreach, and more. Come away with the tools and knowledge to help your library community find “shelf help.”
All sessions will be recorded and made available to all registrants.
Our session schedule is still being finalized, but topics may include:
- Intro to Bibliotherapy
- Collection Development & Readers' Advisory with a Bibliotherapy Lens
- Book Talk Club (BYOBB: Bring Your Own Bibliotherapy Book)
- Boundaries & Mental Health for Staff
- Outreach to Underserved Groups
- Connection & Social Cohesion
The WLA and the WA State Library will work together to make clock hours available for as many sessions as possible.
Registration
State-Wide Access Registration form is now open through September 11.
Individual and Organizational Registration forms open September 18.
